Maryn

This is a photography of an Iran seamstress, whose name is Maryn, who moved to the United States decades ago to escape war from her hometown. The piece is a further investigation of the representation of others. The fragmented image and faded color are employed to represent her identity based on notions of memories and gestures that I observed and collected during the pre-creation research stage.

The work explores the possibilities between photography and materials such as water and sewing thread based on the aim to genuinely represent the subject matter. With the water and thread marks around the surface, the central image is a seamstress’s sewing gesture. The work is a photo positive printed on transparency paper. Through various applications, such as dripping and splashing water onto the photo at different angles, the water lefts its marks on the surface of transparency paper. The sewing thread also left its marks on the surface by delicately adhesive to stay on the surface or vigorously hitting against the surface.
